Why Do I Get Acne?

Q: I have been told that only teenagers get acne. Is it true?

A: No, it isn’t. Acne can be experienced in the childhood and later during the adult years. It is, however, more common between the years 13-18. Almost 80% of teenagers have acne.

Well in this whole world, there are about 70-80% of the teenagers who suffer from acne also known as pimples. And let me assure you, everyone thinks that the acne has created a turmoil in their life. They are the worst enemies of the teens who strive hard, harder and hardest to wade them away from their face or body.

Acne strikes at any age - What is Acne?

Acne also known as Acne Vulgarix is the condition of the skin which causes pimples or zits. This symptoms includes whiteheads, blackheads, and red, patches on the skin which show imflamation. There are lot of reasons because of which Acne happens.

Acne strikes when sebaceous glands or the oil glands of the skin attached to the hair follicles are stimulated. This is most commonly seen during the time of puberty due to evevated male hormones level in both sexes.

The oil which we are talking about is a naturally occuring substance which keeps your skin lubricated and protects it. This oil, if produced in excess, can clog the follicular openings or pores which further enlarges and producs a bump like thing on the skin. The wall of this bump can rupture as the clog matures making the irritating substances and skin bacteria go deep in the skin layers. This can cause inflammation in the end.

Possible causes of Acne

- Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, menstrual periods, stress, etc

- Greasy or oily products used on skin or nearby places

- Certain drugs like steroids, testosterone, etc

- High levels of humidity and sweating

Can I do some Self treatment or at home care

- Clean up - Make a cleanup regime for your skin. Wask with a mild, nondrying soap like Dove, Neutrogena, etc.
- Remove all dirt or make-up from skin and wash few times a day and avoid scrubbing or repeated washing.
- Try to shampoo your hair daily if they are oily in nature. Pull your hair back and don't let them touch your face or back.
- Drink eight glasses of water a day.
- Apply hot compresses to pustules and cysts,

Things to avoid in Acne

- Do not touch, squeeze, scratch, pick, or rub the pimples.
- Do not wear tight headbands, caps, and hats
- Do not touch your face repeatedly with fingers or hands.
- Do not use greasy cosmetics or creams.
