Epidermoid cyst - Symptoms, Cause, Treatment of Epidermoid cyst (previously known as 'sebaceous cyst')

Epidermoid cysts present as cystic swellings of the skin with a central punctum. They contain 'cheesy' keratin rather than sebum; thus the old term 'sebaceous cyst' should be avoided. These cysts occasionally rupture causing significant dermal inflammation which is not infected.

What are the causes of Epidermoid cyst?

•  Swollen hair follicles and skin trauma may help to increase Epidermoid cyst.

•  Blocked gland and producing large sebum may induce to these cysts.

•  Bacteria which causes infection.

•  Because of changes in the lining of hair follicle.

•  It may arise due to comedones or clogged pores .

•  In some cases there may be genetic factor.

•  Injury to the skin may also change in to these cysts.

•  Any surgical procedure may also create epidermoid cysts.

•  Needle biopsy of the breast may also induce epidermoid cysts.

Treatment of Epidermoid cyst

•  Injection of triamcinolone is used to treat inflamed cysts.

•  Antistaphylococcal oral antibiotics is useful for infected cysts.

•  Surgical and lasers techniques such as mini excision, and trephination is useful treatment of Epidermoid cyst.

•  Small infected cysts may remove by injection of steroid medications.

•  Good hygiene can stop these cysts.

•  Antibacterial soap must be used at the time of taking bath.

•  Incision and drainage is used to treat the infected cysts.

•  Carbon dioxide laser is used to treat the woman having multiple cysts on their face.
