  • Your current bras are no longer comfortable
  • You are expecting a baby

Measuring bra size

According to a study in USA, the average bra size is 36C. Most people just quote this and seldom has the size of 36C. Most people who wear this size should actually be wearing either a 34D, 34DD, 32DD or 32E bra. The true average bra size is around 34DD. If you're looking for a better fit, here's how to find your true bra size.

How Do I Determine My Bra Size?

Measuring the Bra Size Look at the picture in the left side and measure the dimensions as shown. These are marked and esplained as below.

Finding the band size

Marking 1 - Measure below your breasts (band size) - Place the tape measure tightly around your back, going under your breasts and across your ribcage. Add four inches (10.2 cm) if you get an even number and five inches (12.7 cm) if you get an odd number. For example, 28 inches (71.1 cm) will become 32 inches (81.3 cm). This is your band size.

Marking 3 - Measure above your breasts (above bust size) - Place the tape measure around your back and upper chest by going above your breasts and under your armpits. Make sure the tape measure lies taut against your skin. If you get an odd number or a fraction, round up to the nearest even number. For instance, 31.6 inches (80.3 cm) will become 32 inches (81.3 cm). This measurement in inches is your band size.

Marking 2 - Measure around your breasts and back (bust size) - Measure the diameter of your chest, including your breasts at their fullest part. This part is usually at the nipple level. To determine your cup size, subtract your band size from your chest plus breast measurement. Hence, if your chest and breast measurement is 34 inches (86.4 cm), and your band size is 32 inches (81.3 cm), you will get a difference of two inches (5.1 cm). The chart below lists the various cup sizes based on the length of the difference:

Your Bustline Measurement will be higher than your chest (“under the breast”) measurement. Your Cup Size is the difference between your Chest Size and your Bustline Measurement size.

Bra designers can calculate the volume of a brassiere cup in several ways depending on the shape of the breast. If the breast is round and essentially the shape of a half-sphere, any of three formulas might be used.

V={D^3 \times .5236 \over 2}

V={r^3 \times 4.1888 \over 2}

V={4 \pi r^3 \over 2}

  • Its very common to have one breast larger than the other. Buy a bra with the cup size that fits the bigger one.

  • A properly sized bra should cover the entire breast and no breast tissue should be spilling or budging out.

FAQ about bra size

Q: Hi, I am Stella I am 18 years. My breast size is huge and it has started to show and hang. Can you help me with any information?

A: Stella, your first priority should be to loose weigh whether it is specific or overall, and then you may lose some weight on your breasts. Also, wear the correct comfort bra so your breasts don't hang. You could also wear something which is a regular bra, and then a sports bra over your regular bra to hold them firmly. Also, shorten the straps slightly to lift them up.

Q: My daughter is 13 years old and going to become almost 14 soon. She has no breasts at all and the breast area is completly flat. Please tell me what I can do to help her.

A: Your daughter can increase her breasts only if she puts on weight on her entire body. Then, her breasts too will get bigger. She could also dress for bigger and fuller breasts, or she could wear padded bras. She should also look at working out so as to increase the chest muscle which further will increase the breast size.
