Tinea Versicolor: Treatment, Picture and cure of garlic Tinea Versicolor

Synonym: Pityriasis Versicolor

It is caused by Malassezia which is seen as short, fine, straight or curved mycelial filaments and masses of small spores. It is most prevalent in countries with warm and humid climates. The sites of choice are the upper part of the trunk, the upper parts of arms, the neck, and less frequently, the forehead and cheeks.

Symptoms of Tinea Versicolor

It is characterized by light-brown macules, plaques or sheets with furfuraceous scaling, which is most evident when the affected part is scraped. The exact colour varies from race to race. In dark races, it appears lighter, almost white, like leucoderma; in white races, the colour of tinea versicolor macules is like cafe-au-lait. Pathological lesions have convex borders; hence they can be easily picked up. The malady is asymptomatic except for slight itching and cosmetic discoloration.

Treatment, Remedy and cure of Tinea Versicolor

The prognosis is good; a cure is possible if re-infection is prevented, and treatment is continued on the following lines:

  1. Underclothing must be washed daily in hot water.
  2. At night, paint sodium thiosulphate 25% in aqueous solution. Tincture merthiolate, or 3% acid salicylic and 3% acid benzoic in spirit, or miconazole or econazole, tincture iodine and U.V.R. are other useful agents in treatment. Some workers have claimed good results with selenium sulphide suspension-Selsun (P) Ketoconazole orally are useful in resistant cases.
